The Lohar Dynasty
A Complete History
A journey through defining moments of Arif Lohar’s global musical legacy.
Three generations of Punjabi folk music — from the villages of British India to Wembley Arena, FIFA, and beyond. From Alam Lohar (1928) to the Lohar Boys (2026).
Dynasty Timeline
1928 — Born in British India
Muhammad Alam Lohar is born in the village of Achh, Kharian Tehsil, Gujrat District, Punjab, British India, into a family of blacksmiths (lohars). From childhood, he reads Sufiana Kalaam — Punjabi spiritual poetry — and begins performing at local gatherings from the age of eight. His instrument of choice becomes the chimta — until then, merely a blacksmith's tool — which he single-handedly transforms into a globally recognised musical instrument.
First GenerationEarly 1940s — Child Recording Artist on Radio Pakistan
Begins his musical journey as a child artist on Radio Pakistan. Records his first album at the age of 13. Develops a distinctive style of singing Punjabi Vaar — epic folk ballads — blending oral storytelling, Sufi devotional poetry, and high-energy chimta performance. His 1941 rendition of Mirza Sahiban in Jhori & Chimta style becomes a defining early recording.
1948 — Early LPs & Rising National Profile
Releases Saif Ul Maluk, one of his earliest long-play recordings with EMI / His Master's Voice Pakistan. Begins building an extraordinary catalogue that will eventually produce 15 Gold Disc LPs — the highest number of any Pakistani artist in HMV Pakistan records to that point. Gains a reputation across Punjab for his extraordinary vocal stamina, able to sing through entire nights without modern amplification.
1950s — Dominates Folk Singing Across Pakistan
Throughout the 1950s, Alam Lohar rises to become the most listened-to folk singer in South Asia. Organises a full-fledged theatre with a complete orchestra, touring all of Punjab for religious and seasonal festivals. Rural communities across Punjab call him Sher-e-Punjab (Lion of Punjab) and Heerah (Diamond). He records 36 distinct renditions of Waris Shah's Heer Ranjha across his career — each in a different style.
1960s — Classic Recordings & Cultural Icon
Produces some of his most celebrated recordings: Qissa Yusuf Zulaykha (1961), Qissa Hirni (1963), Bol Mitti De Baweya (1964), Jugni (1965), Qissa Mirza Sahiban (1967). Is credited with popularising the musical term and storytelling form known as Jugni — a narrative folk tradition through which Alam Lohar shares stories of life's journey, spiritual reflection, and social observation that will define the Lohar family's musical identity for generations.
1970s — International Touring & Peak Fame
Begins touring internationally for South Asian diaspora communities across the United Kingdom, Canada, Norway, United States, Germany, and the Middle East — among the first Pakistani and South Asian artists to perform internationally on this scale. Releases Maa Da Pyaar (1974), Dil Wala Dukhra (1975), and Wajan Mariyan Bulaya (1977). His son Arif is already learning to sing alongside him during this period.
1977 — Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee — Best Performance Award
At Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee celebrations, a singing competition is held between all Commonwealth countries. Alam Lohar wins the Best Performance Award, receiving a gold medal for his unique voice and performance of Jugni. The honour establishes a formal connection between the Lohar family and the United Kingdom — a connection his son Arif will deepen decades later through his own celebrated UK performances.
Queen Elizabeth II Recognition3 July 1979 — Passing of Alam Lohar
Alam Lohar passes away in a road accident near Sham ki Bhattian when a heavily loaded truck collides with his vehicle. He is laid to rest on the outskirts of Lalamusa on the GT Road, Pakistan. His death is mourned across South Asia — Noor Jehan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Lal Chand Yamla Jatt are among the artists who publicly express their grief. President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq posthumously awards him Pakistan's highest civil honour, the Pride of Performance Award, in the same year.
Alam Lohar — 1928–197918 April 1966 — Arif Lohar Born
Muhammad Arif Lohar is born in Achh village, Lala Musa, Gujrat District, Punjab, Pakistan — the same village as his father. One of eight sons of Alam Lohar, he begins singing as a young child alongside his father, eldest brother Arshad Mahmood Lohar, and younger brother Tariq Lohar. His father personally teaches him chimta technique and traditional Punjabi folk repertoire from childhood.
1979 — Formally Takes Up the Legacy, Age 13
Following the sudden death of Alam Lohar in July 1979, Arif — aged just 13 — formally takes over his father's musical legacy. He is the sole son among eight brothers who remains in Pakistan to carry the Lohar dynasty forward, while his brothers settle in the United Kingdom. Trains with a Nautanki Theatre Troupe, deepening his mastery of folk stagecraft, storytelling, and extended vocal performance.
Early 1980s — Solo Career Begins
Begins performing solo, releasing his early albums of traditional Punjabi folk and Sufi devotional music. Early recordings emphasise rural Punjabi themes, the chimta as signature instrument, and the Jugni storytelling tradition inherited from his father. Establishes himself as the primary custodian of the Lohar musical legacy in Pakistan, building a catalogue that will eventually exceed 3,200 songs across 160+ albums.
Mid-1980s — Acting Career in Punjabi Cinema
Moves into acting in Pakistani Punjabi cinema, taking on film roles alongside his music career. Appears in Silsila (1987) — one of his earliest confirmed film credits. Later returns full-time to music at around age 22, having gained valuable stage and performance experience from his time on screen. Over the course of his career, he will star in 45+ feature films across Lollywood.
Late 1980s — Return to Music Full-Time
Returns to music as his primary focus. Prolific recording output continues — dozens of albums released through this period. Stars in the film Zindagi, playing a memorable role alongside Ataullah Khan Issa Khilvi; his songs from the film become widely popular across Pakistan. Begins to grow a national and international fan base.
Mid-1990s — International Touring Begins
Begins touring internationally, taking Punjabi folk music to South Asian diaspora communities in the United Kingdom, United States, and United Arab Emirates. Establishes himself as the pre-eminent voice of traditional Punjabi folk music for Pakistani communities abroad. International touring becomes one of the defining constants of his career, eventually spanning 70+ countries across five continents over 20+ years.
Late 1990s — Expansion into Europe & Australia
Expands international touring into Europe and Australia. Continues a prolific domestic recording schedule, consolidating his reputation across Pakistan and India as the foremost living voice of Punjabi folk music. Performs at major religious and seasonal festivals across Punjab, carrying forward his father's tradition of large-scale folk performance.
